Ok, so gild is important on repairing and enchanting items.
But some things aren't making sense to me, i.e. with unused, enchanted diamond swords:
knockback I + sharpness I = 7XP
only then
sharpness I + knockback I = 8XP
Can understand that when using the anvil you know exactly what you're getting so information technology should cost more than XP, and switching a slightly or mostly used upwardly item for the "cede" item makes a difference in the XP toll.
Is the divergence with that particular example that the basic sharpness enchant costs more than (or less?) then a knockback? How does it add up?

Several things tin can bear upon this particular example. For i, if you lot take put the base items through the anvil before, it will have boosted xp costs in guild to be worked on over again (unless named). Two, when combining ii enchanted items, any new enchants are added onto the base detail for a cost. The twist is that these new enchants cost twice every bit much as normal to exist moved from 1 item to the side by side. Then Sharpness has a price of 1, but to move information technology to another detail it costs 2. Knockback has a cost of 2, to motility it would cost iv.
The wiki folio on the subject, which can be plant here, says this:
